Jurat explained with examples in Tanzania

A jurat also know as a jurat of attestation is a certificate on an affidavit or oath indicating when, where, and before whom it was sworn.

It is a statement by a notary public or other authorized official that the person making the affidavit or oath has been duly sworn.

The jurat typically includes information such as the date of the swearing, the location (usually the city), the name of the person taking the oath, and the fact that the person swore or affirmed the truth of the statements in the document.

According to Section 8 of The Notaries Public and Commissioners for Oaths Act [CAP. 12 R.E. 2019]

Every notary public and commissioner for oaths before whom any oath or affidavit is taken or made under this Act shall insert his name and state truly in the jurat of attestation at what place and on what date the oath or affidavit is taken or made.

The purpose of a jurat is to authenticate the sworn statements and to verify that the person making the statements did so in the presence of a legally authorized official.

This adds a level of formality and credibility to the document.

The following is how the Jurat looks like;
